The Prepper Versus Survivalist Quiz

Between the shows “The Walking Dead” and “Doomsday Preppers” there has been so much attention given to preppers and survivalists that some clarification is needed. What is a prepper? What is a survivalist forum? What’s the difference?

Well, take the quiz below and find out which one better describes you now, or which one you could more easily become someday.

Do you believe absolutely that there will be a total societal breakdown soon? (If the answer is yes, you’re likely to fit into the survivalist model.)

Do you worry more about a natural disaster like a tornado or a bad storm that knocks out power, as opposed to a “Mad Max” scenario? (If so, you’re more of a prepper.)

Do you have (or desire to have) at least 3 different firearms and over a thousand rounds of ammunition to keep you and your family safe? (You’re more of a survivalist than a prepper.)

Do you prefer to stockpile items to have them in an emergency, or do you prefer to learn new skills so that you can do with fewer supplies? (This is tricky, but generally a survivalist is more into practicing / honing skills and a prepper is generally more likely to stockpile.)

Do you have a retreat location stocked with supplies? (You’re more of a survivalist, or a really, really good prepper!)

Have you practiced a weekend without electricity in your home or done a “bugout” run through to see how things go? (You’re more of a survivalist, or a really, really good prepper!)

So you can see that some of the lines are blurred between preppers and survivalists. They both share in common a desire to be prepared for a catastrophe, but the survivalist will focus on the more dire, total breakdown of society scenario.

Regardless of where you are on the spectrum, the fact that you’re reading this says a lot. You want to know more about preparedness, although you aren’t necessarily ready to invest a lot of time and money.

For a next step, you could learn some of the basics about how to put together an emergency car kit and how to get by during an extended power outage. This way, you can get your feet wet without a major commitment!
